Do you ever think about what life would be like if you were living a life with zero waste? A few years ago, we had the same thought! As we started doing more and more research we found that resources on how to get into this lifestyle weren’t as plentiful as we had hoped.
Sure, there are blogs everywhere that explain what a zero-waste lifestyle is, but how hard was it to get started? Do you have to live zero-waste from the very start and go waste-free at the drop of a needle?
Believe us, we’ve been there. We asked ourselves the same questions and that’s exactly why we opened Replenish. After pushing ourselves to transition to a low-waste and eco-conscious lifestyle we’ve got some insider tips that we think will help you on your journey.
3 Items that will help you reduce waste - IMMEDIATELY
We’ll admit that the convenience of paper towels is unmatched. There are so many uses for them from cleaning up spills to cleaning the bathroom mirrors but even though they’re convenient, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a better alternative. UNpaper® Towels are the perfect swap for those disposable paper towels.
First off, they come in awesome colors and styles. Ditch the boring white towels for a pop of color! Reusable paper towels are so much cuter than the old boring designs of the paper versions.
Second, these things are made right here in the US out of Eugene, Oregon. Marley’s Monsters is on a mission to offer sustainable, eco-friendly substitutes for napkins, straws, paper towels, baby essentials and everything in-between, and we love that!
Last but not least, and our favorite part, they’re machine washable. Machine wash warm with like colors, dry in the dryer and then put them in a drawer or roll them up and keep them on your counter. Absorbency is increased after the first few washes and will shrink just enough to be the perfect size for a standard paper towel roll.
The next item we wanted to shine a spotlight on is the OrganiCup. OrganiCup is an award-winning menstrual cup that replaces pads and tampons. It is an easy, healthy and green way to support your menstrual cycle. Did you know that you use an average of 264 pads/tampons/period products per year? That’s more than 3,000 period products which you have used (and thrown away) since starting your period. A menstrual cup does not produce any waste in the form of single-use, disposable packaging. So, switching to reusable menstrual hygiene products is a step in the right direction for the environment as well as, the ease and comfort of your well-being. Switching to a menstrual cup is easy, safe and straightforward. You can find a plethora of OrganiCup resources online such step-by-step directions, tutorials and tips & tricks. Also remember that you are not alone if you do decide to switch. Tens of thousands of women have already made the positive change to be kinder to their bodies as well as to the environment.
Here at Replenish Refillery & Gift, we have a variety of sizes and options. If you’re interested, stop by the shop! We are happy to answer any questions you might have as well! Happy period, happy life.
Okay first off, these things are the cutest items on this list and we LOVE what they do for our clothes. Aside from that, the company itself is even more incredible. Friendsheep was founded by a zero waste entrepreneur, passionate about making eco-friendly products that are cruelty free AND provide work for women and disabled artisans in underprivileged communities of Nepal. A portion of sales goes to supporting those communities.
Why should you stop using dryer sheets?
When Apartment Therapy spoke to The Environmental Working Group’s senior research and database analyst Samara Geller, she told them that dryer sheets can contain a chemical called quaternary ammonium compounds (QACS). These chemicals can cause or worsen asthma and skin irritation, or even worse, cause cancer or reproductive issues.
Wool dryer balls, like Friendsheep’s, are the perfect alternative to toxic and harmful dryer sheets. Dryer balls are better than sheets because they won't damage your clothing, they won't affect the absorbency of your towels, they’ll last you for years AND they can reduce drying time which ultimately saves you energy costs as well!
Switching everyday household items to more sustainable options can seem like an intimidating task. Living a low-waste or zero-waste lifestyle can also be a challenge but we’re here to help you start that transition. Taking it one step at a time and making those small switches already makes a huge difference.
